Omicron variant of COVID-19 confirmed in Halton and Durham regions cases

Omicron, a first-time case of COVID-19 in Halton Regional Health Region (RH) where it was confirmed by the Public Health Agency of Canada on March 27 has been announced by the Halton Health team at 3:30 p.m.

During a meeting today (March 27), the Ontario Omicron Health Board voted to recommend the community isolate, as well as restrict access to the community, to support staff, clients or the general public who may have come in direct contact with the affected individual while in hospital. The decision by the Halton, Niagara, Peel and Durham Health Regions to impose this measure is in line with recommendations made by Health Canada, the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for limiting community contact by the general public, for individuals at higher risk of severe illness from COVID-19, or as a precautionary measure to prevent further spread of the virus.

In response to the Omicron case, health authorities have taken the following actions:

Halton Regional Health Region

In partnership with the Royal Netherlands Navy, the public is asked to stay in their homes while in Halton Region for at least another day to two weeks.

The number of people who have been to the Omicron residence since March 19 to March 20 has now been reduced to zero.

The Omicron family have been asked to self-isolate from home to home, until further notice, to help prevent a secondary spread of the virus.

The Omicron family are now being asked to provide a self-isolating room in the home or at a nursing home.

Residents who live on Omicron’s property have been asked to keep their distance to one another and to not touch any surfaces.

The Omicron residence is being disinfected using a bleach based sanitizer, which allows for an effective and safe disinfecting procedure.
