Serena Williams suspended by the world ranking for two years by the USATF

WTA Tour set to return to China in 2023 following suspension over Peng Shuai situation

Serena Williams, who is ranked 16th in the world, has taken the first title of her career at the end of the season, becoming the only woman to win a Grand Slam championship since Margaret Court’s 1979 Wimbledon title.

The United States Open final was watched by 80 million people worldwide, the most for any grand slam on home soil.

That made it the highest rated show on any network other than the four-hour premiere of The Walking Dead in the United States.

In the second world ranking event of 2019, Spain has moved up to ninth after claiming its first title with a win over France in the Davis Cup final.

In the 2018 season, Williams had won five titles at the All England Club and had the most major titles in the WTA rankings, with 25.

Earlier on Monday, she was set to be suspended by the world ranking for two years by the USATF, after her suspension from the China Open this weekend.

The organisation’s decision comes after the US Tennis Association (USTA) said it did not want to take any action following media reports of the situation.

Williams, who has not played Fed Cup in the last two seasons, became the first woman to win at least 10 Grand Slam singles titles in the WTA Tour.

The WTA Tour is to visit China in 2020 and is currently ranked third and fifth on the WTA circuit, respectively, which are the two highest positions in the rankings.
